WeRide's fully autonomous robotaxis have been operating commercially in Guangzhou's Huangpu district 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, since 2021. There is no safety driver. The vehicle monitors its environment with 360-degree LiDAR, multiple cameras, and millimeter-wave radar, processes the data in real time, and makes driving decisions at speeds up to 60 km/h in mixed urban traffic that includes motorcycles, elderly cyclists, school buses, and the occasional livestock. It is the most advanced demonstration of autonomous vehicle technology available to a civilian passenger anywhere in the world. Your companion downloads the WeRide app, creates an account, hails the vehicle, and rides with you — but their role is less navigation and more narration: the technological architecture behind what you're experiencing, the regulatory story of how Guangzhou became the world's most permissive AV testing and commercial deployment environment, and the economic stakes of a technology whose global value is measured in trillions.
