The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall in Zhongshan Qi Road is regarded by architectural historians as the most significant surviving example of Lingnan folk architecture in China — a building that is itself a declaration, in stone and wood and ceramic and bronze, of what a single clan was capable of achieving in the Pearl River Delta in 1888. The building's decorative program encompasses all seven of the techniques known as the Lingnan Qijue: wood carving, stone carving, brick carving, ceramic sculpture, clay sculpture, iron casting, and colored painting — a taxonomy of craft that your companion explains not as abstract categories but as specific objects on specific surfaces, each one pointing to a workshop somewhere in Guangdong province. The clan hall was built to educate: to prepare Chen family candidates for the imperial examinations. It still educates — just differently now.
