Morning (8 AM–12 PM — maglev is least crowded before noon)
In 2004, Shanghai opened the world's first commercial high-speed maglev line — a 30-kilometer track connecting Pudong International Airport to the city that, on its inaugural run, reached 431 km/h. Today it operates at 300 km/h as a daily commuter service, which is still faster than a Formula 1 car at top speed, and which you can ride for less than $10 USD. Your companion designs a half-day circuit: ride the maglev to and from the airport (not to catch a flight — just to ride it), then hail a Caocao or WeRide robotaxi back to the city, and finish at a WeChat Pay-only noodle shop where the entire transaction, from ordering to payment, happens on your phone with your companion's help. By the end you've experienced three transportation technologies that don't exist in most of the world, and your companion has explained why China was able to deploy them at scale before anywhere else.
Longyang Road subway/maglev station (Lines 2/7/16), maglev platform. Your companion will be at the ticket machines at the agreed time.
The maglev is easy to ride alone — but without context, it's just a fast train. Your companion turns the circuit into a curated argument about technology and infrastructure: why China moved from bicycle-only streets to autonomous vehicle fleets in 30 years, and what that pace of change means for the rest of the world. The technology tour is, ultimately, a China story.
