The hutong craft beer scene is Beijing's best-kept secret — a constellation of tiny taprooms hidden behind sliding wooden doors, down candlelit alleys, in the shell of a former grain warehouse or a 1970s bike repair shop. Each bar is a manifesto: against bland commercial lager, against the idea that China can't produce world-class craft. Your companion, who has been drinking their way through this neighborhood since the first taproom opened a decade ago, knows which bars are worth the detour and which brewers are doing genuinely interesting things. You'll taste a smoked porter aged in baijiu barrels, a wheat beer brewed with osmanthus flowers, and a double IPA dry-hopped with Sichuan peppercorn. Between bars, you walk — through lantern-lit lanes, past old men playing erhu outside courtyard homes, past the occasional cat sleeping in a doorway. The city doesn't get more atmospheric than this after dark.
Nanluoguxiang subway station (Line 8), Exit B. Your companion will be waiting outside the exit near the street lamp, 7 PM sharp.
The hutong bar scene has no tourist infrastructure — addresses aren't listed online, some bars have no signage at all, and the good ones fill up fast on weekends. Your companion has regulars-level access to the best spots and knows how to get you a stool at a packed bar. They also know when to move on — no getting stuck in a mediocre spot all night.
